Comprehensive Editing | Copy Editing | Proofreading | Sensitivity Reads
What comes to mind when you hear the word “editor”? Let me hazard a guess . . . a book manuscript marked in red, right?
Did you know that editors do far more than correct participles and modifiers? We help you see your work through the eyes of your reader. Often, I find that small business owners are experts in their field. They are great at doing what they do . . . but they often have a hard time communicating their expertise in a way that is meaningful and effective.
This is where I come in. I can help you see your work through the eyes of your reader.
Did you know that there are different types of editing?
Comprehensive/Substantive/Developmental Editing.
This goes by many names, but at its core, this is the deepest level of editing. In this phase, I help you develop your content, so your message is clear, concise, and relatable for your reader.
Copy Editing.
At this level of editing, we are looking primarily at grammar, sentence structure, consistency, and overall organization of the text. This is a great way to make sure that your writing is accurate and flows smoothly from one idea to the next.
Proofreading.
This is the simplest form of editing. In proofreading, I only look for grammatical and spelling errors. Often, people just want something proofread if it needs a quick polish or is ready to go to print.
Sensitivity Reads.
I spent nearly ten years living in the most remote city in the continental U.S. — Page, AZ. The town of Page is surrounded entirely by Navajo Nation. As a teacher in this unique community, I had the privilege of serving a diverse group of students from a variety of backgrounds, and the Dine culture is especially close to my heart. If you are writing a story or other materials that involve specialized groups of people, I am happy to assist with a sensitivity read.
To me, editing is like putting the final icing on the cake. I am a “light touch” editor who is often commended for my ability to make writing clear while maintaining the author’s voice. As one of my client’s once said, “It’s still my voice and writing . . . but better!”
I promise . . . I won’t tear your work to pieces. As an editor, it’s simply my goal to make your communication more effective and accessible to your audience. Contact me today to learn more.
